The Initiatory is the debut release from Apostate Cigars, a bold and thought-provoking brand founded by Brandon Oveson and Kendrick Woolstenhulme, two Utah natives who launched their boutique cigar company in 2020. Inspired by the Greek word Apostia—meaning defection, revolt, or departure—Apostate Cigars challenges convention while paying homage to personal history, culture, and belief.
Named after a sacred initiation ceremony in the Mormon religion, The Initiatory serves as the perfect metaphor for the founders’ own journey and the brand’s fearless identity. But this cigar isn’t just symbolic—it’s masterfully constructed and impressively balanced.
Featuring an oily Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper, a rich Mexican San Andrés binder, and well-aged Nicaraguan fillers, The Initiatory delivers unexpected finesse. Though the blend components suggest a full-bodied powerhouse, expert blending results in a medium-bodied profile that’s smooth, complex, and deeply satisfying.
Expect notes of cedar, cocoa, leather, earth, and subtle baking spice, with a creamy texture and even burn from start to finish. Whether you're new to Apostate or have followed them since the beginning, The Initiatory is a smoke that commands attention and rewards the curious palate.
