The A.J. Fernandez Last Call Maduro Flaquitas takes the familiar Last Call concept in a darker, more tobacco-driven direction. Last Call began as the cigar A.J. Fernandez would bring out for guests toward the end of an evening at his home in Nicaragua. The Maduro replaces the Habano's Ecuadorian wrapper with a Pennsylvania Broadleaf, surrounding an all-Nicaraguan binder and filler blend and giving Last Call a richer, more assertive personality.
At 6" x 46, the Flaquitas is particularly well suited to Broadleaf. The relatively narrow ring gauge gives the dark, substantial wrapper a meaningful role throughout the smoke rather than allowing it to disappear behind a large filler core. The profile centers on earth, dark cocoa and pepper, with a restrained underlying sweetness rounding out the tobacco. It's medium-to-full in character, but the attraction is less about raw strength than the combination of Broadleaf richness and the more focused proportions of the Flaquitas.
For smokers who appreciate Pennsylvania Broadleaf and traditional ring gauges, the Flaquitas is an especially interesting member of the Last Call Maduro family. The six-inch length gives the blend time to develop, while the 46 ring keeps the wrapper involved from beginning to end. Put a few in the humidor for after dinner or whenever there's time to linger over Last Call—the Flaquitas is a format that lets the Broadleaf do what it does best.
